Reflecting on ‘Meeting Point’
‘Meeting Point’ expresses the artist’s wonder at ever-changing nature - interlinked and transformative.
In this composition the waters of the Rio Grande meet the waters of the Caribbean Sea, constantly impacting
the ecosystem and regenerating animal, plant and human life. And, in the distance, as some Jamaican say,
the dormant volcano, Duck Ant Hill, hovers. Change is the constant. We feel the cool ‘sea breeze’ by the river bank,
watch the movement of the tides and hear the rumble of the waves on the stones brought down by the river. The artist‘s
attention was first drawn to the heavy weathered root in the foreground, striking in its barren yet majestic form,
seductively touched by the gentle waves. It was probably uprooted after its long graceful lush bamboo shoots were cut down,
to make the poles for the bamboo rafts that take couples down the famous river to Rafters Rest , the final stop by the mouth
of the Rio Grande in Port Antonio, one of Jamaica’s well-known tourist centres.
Change is inevitable; sometimes its for
better sometimes for worse.
